Márianosztra – Nagyirtás forest railway

On the section between Márianosztra and Nagyirtáspuszta, the rolling stock is being upgraded and, once the new motor train that is being built for this section is up and running, it will be easier to handle the increased passenger traffic.

The alignment, gradient and aesthetic value of the new section of track are all curiosities. The route between Szob and Nagybörzsöny is one of the longest and most winding mountain forest railways in Hungary. The trail between Szob and Nagyirtáspuszta climbs more than 300 metres, reaching 425 metres at its highest point and descending almost 200 metres after Nagyirtáspuszta. Only the Budapest Children’s Railway climbs higher than this in Hungary, and only by ten metres. The development is both an attraction and a service: it opens the way for all types of environmentally conscious forest tourism to the unique values of the Börzsöny inland region, increasing the tourist attractiveness of the area.
